A cracked patio, driveway removal, or block-wall tear-out does not fit neatly into a standard junk-removal price based on how much space the material takes up. It is heavy, it can overload a trailer quickly, and a mixed load may carry a surprisingly high disposal bill.
But concrete is also one of the most recyclable materials in the construction and demolition stream. When a load is kept clean and routed to an aggregate recycler, your disposal cost can be far lower than a landfill charge. Why concrete is a different service line
Most household cleanouts are priced around volume and disposed of by weight. Concrete reverses that relationship: it takes up relatively little space but adds weight very quickly. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the United States generated about 600 million tons of construction and demolition debris in 2018, more than twice the amount of municipal solid waste. Concrete and other mineral materials are a major part of that stream, and established recycling markets exist in many regions.
The business opportunity is simple: a dedicated concrete or aggregate recycler may accept a genuinely clean load for no charge, a small flat fee, or a low per-ton rate because the facility can crush and sell the material as recycled base. A mixed or contaminated load goes to a different pricing tier. Your margin depends less on finding a magical disposal site than on protecting the clean-load classification from the moment the crew starts loading.
What counts as clean concrete?
Every receiving facility sets its own acceptance rules, so call before quoting the job. Across the market, a clean load usually means:
- Concrete, brick, block, asphalt, or other specifically accepted masonry material only.
- No drywall, wood, roofing, household trash, organic debris, or other unrelated C&D waste.
- No paint, oil, chemical staining, or obvious hazardous contamination.
- Limited attached soil or dirt. Some facilities use a threshold around 10% by volume, while others use a stricter visual standard.
- Pieces below the facility's maximum size. Thirty-six inches is a common ceiling, but some facilities use smaller limits.
- Rebar and wire mesh within the facility's accepted allowance, or removed and handled as a separate steel stream.

Do not load a few chunks of drywall or asphalt shingles on top of an otherwise clean concrete run just because there is room. A crew member who is not trained on the distinction can erase the disposal savings during loading.
A practical crew rule is: concrete and masonry get separated at the customer site, not at the landfill. Photograph the load before leaving when the job is large or the customer needs recycling documentation. If rebar is present, ask whether the facility accepts it, charges a different tier, or wants the steel removed first.

- Massachusetts: state rules restrict disposal, incineration, or transfer for disposal of asphalt pavement, brick, and concrete. Read 310 CMR 19.017 and the state's waste-ban compliance guidance.
- Los Angeles: the city's C&D program requires covered mixed construction and demolition material to go to certified processors, with enforcement handled through the Waste Hauler Compliance Program.
- LEED projects: green-building work may require documented diversion from landfill. The exact credit language depends on the rating system and version, but the USGBC construction and demolition waste credit is a good place to start.
Rules vary by state, city, project, and facility. Do not market a job as compliant based on a general article. Confirm the current requirement with the local authority, project manager, and receiving facility.

Weight matters more than trailer volume
Broken concrete weighs roughly 150 pounds per cubic foot. That means a trailer can reach its payload limit while it still looks less than half full. Before accepting recurring concrete work, check the trailer's GVWR, empty weight, actual payload, axle ratings, tires, brakes, and tow-vehicle limits.
- A 14,000-pound-GVWR dump trailer that weighs roughly 4,000β4,500 pounds empty may have about 9,500β10,000 pounds of usable payload, not a full visual bed of concrete.
- Shorter sidewalls are often more practical for dense material than tall walls designed for brush or bulky household debris.
- Match the tow vehicle to the loaded combination, not just the trailer's advertised rating.
- Use a roll-off or heavier-duty dump trailer if concrete is becoming a standing service line rather than an occasional add-on.
Overloading creates more than a ticket risk. It affects braking and handling and can damage a trailer you still need for higher-margin furniture and cleanout work.
Three ways to price the job
1. Per ton
Per-ton pricing most closely matches how many receiving facilities charge. It works best when you have a reliable scale ticket or enough historical data to estimate weight. Build labor, demolition, loading, travel, equipment, and margin into the customer price; keep the disposal cost as its own line in your internal job math.
2. Per load
If your recycler prices a dump trailer, tandem axle, or roll-off by the load, a per-load customer price can simplify quoting. Make the acceptable material and maximum load level explicit so a customer does not assume a visually full trailer can be loaded with concrete.
3. Per cubic yard, with a density adjustment
Standard junk-removal volume pricing is the weakest fit for concrete. If your quoting system only supports cubic yards, add a concrete or masonry density multiplier, a minimum disposal allowance, or a weight-based surcharge. Never reuse the same volume rate you use for couches and bagged household debris.
A simple margin example
Suppose a customer needs a 400-square-foot concrete patio removed. The final broken material might weigh roughly 5β6 tons depending on slab thickness, reinforcement, soil, and how much material is removed with it.
- At a clean-concrete recycling rate of $0β$15 per ton, the receiving cost could be about $0β$75.
- A landfill or mixed C&D route could cost materially more, especially if the facility bills the load as contaminated or special handling.
- Your customer-facing price should be driven primarily by demolition labor, loading time, equipment, travel, risk, and marginβnot by the assumption that every ton must go to a landfill.
The savings are not guaranteed, but the decision is measurable. Quote the job with a verified clean-concrete outlet, track the actual scale ticket or load fee, and compare the result with your normal disposal route.
Before you take your first concrete job
- Identify two or three nearby concrete, aggregate, or C&D recycling facilities instead of relying only on your default landfill.
- Call each facility and confirm current rates, hours, payment methods, max piece size, dirt tolerance, rebar policy, and what happens if the load is rejected.
- Train the crew to separate concrete and masonry at the customer site and keep photos or scale tickets when documentation matters.
- Confirm the trailer's real payload and the tow vehicle's loaded rating before advertising the service widely.
- Check the state and city rules that apply to the job, especially for commercial, municipal, and LEED-adjacent work.
- Decide whether recycled-material receipts are a customer deliverable and build that admin time into the price.
- Review the receiving facility's rules again before the first large job. Rates and acceptance criteria change.
